Tenancy
Despite what the property deeds may tell you, we are not landlords of this beautiful Earth.
We are tenants.
Fortunately our landlord is benign, and happy for us to stay rent-free for as long as we wish, on the condition that we keep the place reasonably tidy.
So our question is:
For how long do we wish to extend our tenancy?
Answering this question requires asking another:
For how long shall we continue as a species?
The answer to this, both happily and unhappily, is not “forever”.
Our species will eventually come to an end, one way or another.
Accepting this reality begins with accepting our own mortality as individuals.
This takes time and self reflection.
Pro tip: it’s easier to accept our own death when we know we are living our best life. When we feel there is too much unfinished business to attend to, death becomes very difficult to contemplate.
So it is by coming to terms with our own mortality, that we can begin to fully and freely address the question of how we want to live as tenants on Earth.
