Survival and meaning
It’s no surprise that Health, Relationships and Money are the three great concerns for most individuals.
They are the concerns that have greatest bearing on our survival.
But what happens when our survival no longer feels under imminent threat?
We say to ourselves: okay, we are alive, so now what?
This is when a fourth concern begins to appear: Meaning.
This is potentially a more difficult area to navigate, as there are no immediate or easy practical steps to implement. Rather, it is a slow and sometimes painstaking process of unfolding, exploration, further unfolding and further exploration.
I think our search for meaning never really ends and is perhaps the most interesting aspect of being alive.
I also think meaning and purpose are two different things. Purpose asks: what is my direction? Meaning asks: what is the point?
